Pro Bono O.R. is looking for a skilled volunteer to assist hackney CVS to plan its strategy for 2106 and beyond.

Please find details of a new project below.  

Hackney CVS (Hackney Council for Voluntary Service)

Information about the organisation:

Charitable objectives:  We are the umbrella / infrastructure body for the voluntary and community sector (VCS) in Hackney. As a responsive charity Hackney CVS believes that the voluntary and community sector plays a critical role in tackling poverty and disadvantage by working with key stakeholders to address local inequalities.

We strive to challenge oppression and prejudice, to promote diversity and to work towards a society where full equality for all is a reality.

Project summary:

Project: To develop a new strategic plan for 2016 onwards in the face of a challenging external environment.

Time commitment: 4 days

Location:  Dalston, Hackney, London E8 2LY (3 days in office, one from home)

This project is suitable for an individual volunteer, pair or team of analysts.  If you would like to work on a project with the support of a mentor please do specify in your application and I can arrange this.  Lastly, if you are interested in working on a project but cannot meet the deadline specified please do register your interest in the first instance before the deadline.

Skilled Volunteered analysts required for several projects #ORblog

The Pro Bono O.R. scheme is currently looking for volunteers for three projects.

Extra Care

Information about the organisation:

Charitable objectives: To provide better lives for older people in high quality affordable homes.

Main activities of the organisation: Care and housing provider.

Project summary:

Project 1: To develop a customer requirements and satisfaction measurement process that can be used to inform what the service provides, to whom and when.

Time commitment: approx. 6-9 days (see project scope for a breakdown)

Location:  Mix of onsite (Birmingham, B31 2FR) and remote working.

Project 2: To analyse demand for the Fitness Suite service so that opening hours are better matched to customers' needs (with a view to increasing usage and therefore revenues).

Time commitment: approx. 6-9 days (see project scope for a breakdown)

Location:  Mix of onsite (Birmingham, B31 2FR) and remote working.

Oxfordshire Advocacy

Information about the organisation:

Charitable objectives: To provide a free, confidential and independent advocacy service.

Main activities of the organisation: Advocacy support delivered by trained volunteers and part time staff.

Project summary:

Project: To review how they measure outcomes of advocacy cases and thus their effectiveness, impact and outcomes.

Time commitment: approx. 5 days

Location:  Initial meeting in Oxford, then home based.

Please read the detailed project proposal and if you feel you are able to offer your assistance please complete the application form and return to me along with your CV by midday on Wednesday 20^th May.

Please specify on your application which project you are applying for.

These projects are suitable for an individual, a pair or a team of analysts.  If you would like to work on the project but cannot commit to the required time please do get in touch as I may be able to pair you with another analyst.  Additionally if you would like to work on a project with the support of a mentor please do specify in your application and I can arrange this.  Lastly, if you are interested in working on a project but cannot meet the deadline specified please do register your interest in the first instance before the deadline.

A flying start to 2015

Well what a busy start to the year 2015 has been.  Before you know it March has arrived, the sun is starting to shine and we are almost into spring.  In this second issue I want to tell you about all the latest news from Pro Bono O.R. including collaborating with Career Volunteer, what it’s like to be a volunteer and an update on the projects.

Volunteer Experience

Project updates

Since the start of the year we have completed 4 projects including London Quadrant Housing Trust and two with Elfrida Rathbone (keep an eye on the webpage for the case study slides).  We have had 15 new enquires and have started 3 new projects with Ethical Property Foundation and two with Diabetes UK.

Mentoring

Did you know that many projects are suitable for individuals, pairs or teams of volunteers?  Additionally if you would like to undertake a project but feel that you would benefit from the support of a mentor we can also offer that.  Here a volunteer comments on the benefit of having a mentor: ‘We really appreciate the support you have given us over the course of the project. I would never have had the confidence to embark on this if you had not agreed to be a mentor’.

I am delighted to announce that Pro Bono O.R. will be working with Career Volunteer.

Career Volunteer works with charities and social enterprises around the world to assist with trustee recruitment, skilled volunteers and Board members through corporate volunteering, employee engagement, skilled volunteering programmes and executive search.

Career Volunteer works with skilled volunteers - people with strong skill sets looking to add to their careers through volunteering. Their aim is to make skilled volunteering or being a trustee a normal part of working life for the majority of people; to unleash their skills in a way that builds capacity and resources for charities worldwide. 

They are keen to see more large companies provide structured time and support for their emerging leaders to engage in supporting charities as trustees and skilled volunteers through their CSR, corporate social responsibility programmes and their leadership development programmes, seeing this as good for everyone concerned. 

Career Volunteer's vision to unleash the talents and skills in the corporate and public sector for the benefit of charities and social enterprises has great synergy with Pro Bono O.R., whose aim is to use skilled volunteering to help third sector organisations, give volunteers opportunities to develop their knowledge and skills and to increase the awareness of Operational Research.

Working together will enable Pro Bono O.R. to carry out more projects by being able to advertise projects through the Career Volunteer website and therefore having a wider pool of volunteers who are able to apply for projects.

I am really excited by this collaboration and look forward to seeing how we can provide mutual support for one another; ultimately providing benefit to the third sector and providing more opportunities for skilled volunteering.

Well what a year 2014 has been for Pro Bono O.R.  Whether you are a volunteer analyst, an organisation who we have supported or a contact who supports or promotes the scheme, I want to say a big thank you from myself and all the staff at The OR Society, without your support we would not be where we are today.

The Beginning

Back in 2011 a few members of the society got together and decided to pilot a scheme to offer third sector organisations free consultancy to help to help reduce costs and improve utilisation of limited resources.  On the back of its success in September 2013 The OR Society launched its Pro Bono O.R. scheme.

Where we are now

Since Sept 2013 the scheme has completed 9 projects, has 15 active projects and a further 10 which are being scoped.  Below you can see some of the organisations we have worked with and are currently working with. We currently have over 200 volunteers across the UK and these range from retired professionals to analysts in their early career, consultants and others in the O.R./analytics profession who either volunteer in their own time, are given company time or a mixture of both.

Feedback

For me the best thing about this scheme is the real difference O.R. can make.  The feedback I receive from both the organisations and the volunteers has been overwhelmingly positive.
